Mida ma siin Küprosel ikka tegelikult teen? / What am I really doing here in Cyprus?

Nagu eelmises postituses mainisin, töötan ma Küprosel hotellis animatsioonitiimis. Ma ei ole kindel, kas eesti keeles on selline sõna nagu animaator olemas või olen ma selle ise inglise keelest tuletanud sõnast animator. Igatahes see ma olen ja see tähendab inimest, kes tegeleb teiste meelelahutusega. Ideaalis peaks meie hotellis olema 6 (isegi 7) inimest animatsioonitiimis, segaduste tõttu oli meil vahepeal 4, nüüd siiski 5 inimest. Võrreldes paljude teiste hotellidega, on meil siiski üsna väike tiim, aga sellele hotellile paras.

Vahepeal valitses olukord, kus keegi meist ei osanud vene keelt ning miskipärast on Küpros üks venelaste meelispaik või vähemalt teiste puhkajate arvuga on neid siin kindlasti kõige rohkem. Lisaks toovad venelased (õigemini isegi vene maffia (allikaks kohalikud ärimehed)) Küprosele, eriti Limassoli (linn, kus elan), suuri sissetulekuid; neil on siin palju uusarendusi. Aga venelased isegi kui nad oskavad, siis nad ei taha inglise keeles rääkida. Lastega on lihtsam, saab hakkama ka kehakeeles või osad, supertublid kakskeelsed lapsed, tõlgivad teistele. Nüüd on meid animatsioonitiimis jälle 5 ning õnneks uus tüdruk räägib vene keelt. Viimati rääkis laste ja nende vanematega vene keeles Silver, kes lahkus juba augusti lõpus. Ma arvan, et meie ise saaks hakkama ka vene keeleta, aga lapsevanemad tunnevad puudust vene keele kõnelejast.

Animatsioonitöö on ära jagatud laste ja täiskasvanute animatsiooniks, samuti ka töötajad. Mind võeti tööle kids club’i ehk (põhimõtteliselt) lastetuppa, siiski lubati mulle, et saan ka teisi (täiskasvanute) tegevusi proovida läbi viia, kui soovin. Kuigi ma olen soovinud, siis ei ole sellega nii hõlpsasti läinud. Kids club’is peaks olema vähemalt kaks töötajat, aga kui ma siia jõudsin, siis ei olnud mitte kedagi ja kõik 4 inimest olid ametlikult täiskasvanute animatsioonis. Seega valitses olukord, kus kõik tegid kõike. See on ka põhjus, miks ma siiani ei saanud peaaegu üldse kids club’ist välja, isegi õue, sest keegi pidi ju lastega olema ning kõik “vanad olijad” olid kids club’ist tüdinenud. Uus tüdruk, kes jõudis üleeelmisel nädalal siia, on ka õnneks ainult laste animatsioonis koos minuga.

Päevaplaan näeb tavaliselt välja järgmine. Kids club on avatud:

10.00-13.00 15.00-17.00 19.30-22.00, mis on ühtlasi ka meie tööajad. Ajaliselt me väga pikalt ei tööta (7-7,5h), aga kuna tööle peame päeva jooksul minema 3 korda, siis see hakib tohutult päeva ära. Programm (pilt allpool) näeb ette, et 10-12ni on lastel loominguline tegevus või siis vaba kava. Kell 12 on võimalus mõne animaatoriga minna basseini laste tantsulist-mängulist võimlemist tegema.

Täiskasvanute animatsiooni programm näeb iga päev ette kell 10.30 stretching ehk venitus ja kell 11.00 Zumba tantsimine, mõlemad tegevused pool tundi. See on tõeliselt üks päeva tipphetki, vähemalt minu jaoks. Üldiselt viib seda läbi üks mu tiimikaaslane, aga vähemalt üks kord nädalas, kui tal on vaba päev, siis saan mina Zumbat anda, vahel õnnestub isegi tihedamalt. Viimased nädalad oleme me seda oma tiimikaaslasega koos lihtsalt iseenda jaoks teinud, isegi kui ühtki hotellikülastajat ei liitu, siis teeme seda kolmekesi ainult enda jaoks – mina ja 2 tiimikaaslast. Varem toimusid need tegevused alati rannas, kus oli tegelikult tohutult kuum, aga võibolla pisut rohkem meretuult. Nüüd toimub see (endiselt õues) hotellile lähemal baari kõrval muruplatsil, mis on kõva kaldega. Mõlemad pinnased (rannaliiv ja mäekallakul muruplats) on päris proovilepanevad ja midagi sellist, kus ma ei ole harjunud tantsima või võimlema. Päike on endiselt intensiivne ka muruplatsil, aga minu meelest natuke talutavam.

Kell 13 läheme pausile, kas siis tavaliselt koju trenni tegema, puhkama või siis tunniks ajaks randa päikest nautima. Tagasi peame olema 20-30min enne kella 15, et jõuaksime lõunat süüa hotelli buffee’s.

Kell 15 avame taas kids club’i. Kolmel päeval nädalas (esmasp, kolmap, reede) on programmi järgi siis aeg “suureks mänguks”. See kujutab endast, et vastavalt päevateemale, mis on kas piraadid, halloween või safari, meisterdavad lapsed endale meie juhendamisel maskid/peakatted ja lähevad ümber hotelli aardejahile. Peakatted on siis, kas piraadi-, kummituse-, kõrvitsa- või mõne looma kujutisega mütsid. Vastavalt teemapäevale otsivad lapsed ka vihjeid ümber hotelli. Võitja saab tavaliselt tasuta jäätise “pileti” ja enamasti on selle üle ülimalt õnnelik.

Peale mängu, kella 16 paiku on aeg näomaalinguteks – see on ka vahva osa päevast! Alguses olin ma selles päris koba, aga ajapikku olen paremaks läinud. Lisan mõned pildid oma loomingulisusest.

Täiskasvanute animatsioonis toimub kell 16 vesiaeroobika basseinis, millest olen ka korduvalt osa võtnud, et meie läbiviija (mu tiimikaaslane) täitsa üksi ei teeks ja hotellikülastajad ikka liituksid. Kell 17 läheme taas pausile. Siis on aega 2h, et kas väike lõunauinak teha või muud targemat (tavaliselt liiga väsinud siis)… Varem sain sellel ajal ka veel randa minna, aga nüüdseks juba läheb jahedamaks ja kell 18 võib päike isegi loojuma hakata.

Kell 19.30 peavad osad meist (tavaliselt mina ja uus tüdruk) hotellis tagasi olema, et kids club taas avada. Kuna me läheme varem kui teised, saame ka varem vabaks (21.30 viimasel ajal, teised 22.00). Kell 20 algab mini disko, mis on ka üks päeva tipphetki, vähemalt laste jaoks, meie jaoks hakkab juba ära tüütama. Varem toimus disko üsna suurejooneliselt õues baarialal, kus oli ka lastele tõeline disko atmosfäär. Tantsida sai laval, muusika oli kõva, saime kasutada ka mikrofoni ning lapsi oli vahel rohkem kui paarkümmend. Nüüd aga oleme laste vähesuse ja restorani külastajate kaebuste tõttu (liiga vali muusika puhkajatele) sisse kolinud ehk siis õigemini jäämegi tuppa ja tantsime kids club’is. Üldiselt tantsime enda naljakaid Crazy Frog, kana- ja Minionitantse 5-10 lapsega.

Teisipäeviti toimub hotelli uutele külalistele pidulik vastuvõtt. On võimalus tutvuda manager’idega ja nautida hotelli poolt pakutavaid suupisteid ja šampust. Meile, animatsioonile tähendab see lisakohustusi, sest meilt oodatakse enda üles löömist pidulikuks ürituseks ja jutustamist külalistega. See on ausalt öeldes olnud kohati üks keerulisemaid ülesandeid, mis mu töös on, sest selline pinnapealne small talk pole üldse minu jaoks. Palju külalisi on ka venekeelsed ja siin juba kehakeelega end välja ei puikle. Kogu see üritus on minu jaoks liiga võlts, kuid iseenesest mõte pole halb, et pakkuda külalistele võimalust oma hotelli töötajatega paremini tuttavaks saada ning soovi korral on siis võimalik tagasisidet anda oma hotelli kogemusest. Loomulikult võib juhutuda, et kohtun väga toredate inimestega ja jagan nendega sügavat, meeldivat vestlust, aga (viimasel ajal) kui hotell on täis vene keelt kõnelevaid külalisi, siis see ei juhtu nii tihti.

Hilisõhtuti toimuvad hotellis meelelahutuslikud show’d, mis on enamuses mõeldud täiskasvanutele. See on osa täiskasvanute animatsiooni programmist, aga meie animatsioonitiim ei ole seal esinejateks. Seda teevad professionaalsed tantsijad või muud esinejad. Näiteks toimuvad meil esmaspäeviti suurejoonelised tuleshow’d, teisipäeviti komöödilised mustkunstiõhtud, lisaks veel vägevad Küprose või latiino tantsuõhtud või on lihtsalt kinoõhtu popkorniga. Ma arvan, et olen enamus show’sid, kas ainult ühe korra või isegi mitte kordagi näinud, sest enamasti sel ajal pean ma olema kids club’is.

Kodu ehk korter asub meil umbes 5min kaugusel hotellist, aga edasi-tagasi käimist on omajagu, eriti kui 3 korda päevas tööle tuleb minna.

Puhkust meile palju ei anta, nädalas on kõigil üks vaba päev ja enne seda üks vaba õhtu. Seegi on hea ja olen alati püüdnud seda vaba aega osavalt ja huvitavalt ära sisustada. Olen käinud enamasti erinevaid linnu ja paiku külastamas, et paremini Küprost tundma saada.

Kui nüüd täitsa aus olla, siis augustikuuga sai meil “kõrghooaeg” läbi ja sellega ka enamus tegevusi. Esimesed septembri nädalad olime täitsa šokis, et kuidas nii saab ja kas jätkubki, kuni hooaja lõpuni, aga õnneks on mõningaid lapsi ikka tulnud, kelle meelt saame lahutada. Külastajaid hotellis isegi jagub ning nüüd oktoobris on uuesti hotell täiesti täis, aga palju on vanemaid inimesi või siis peresid beebidega või tullakse ainult konverentsi külastama. Lapsed meie sihtgrupis on ilmselt kõik juba koolipingis. Seega, kuna päevasel ajal lapsi enamasti meil kids club’is pole, siis on pisut igavaks läinud. Vahel 5 animaatorit lihtsalt istuvad tegevusetult (telefonis enamasti) ja ootavad… Õhtune minidisko on õnneks populaarsem ja kuskilt ilmuvad ka mõned lapsed kohale.

Kuna hooaja / minu töö lõpuni on jäänud ainult loetud nädalad, siis ma ei kurda. Eks see ongi üks paras puhkusetöö olnud. Mu pere tuleb mulle peagi nädalaks külla ning siis läheb aeg juba lennates. Olen siin olles saanud väga vajalikke ja olulisi õppetunde elu ja iseenda kohta. Need on olnud kohati valusad kogemused, aga eks need ju kasvatavadki kõige rohkem ning ju on seda millekski vaja. Nüüd jääb ainult järele jäänud aega maksimaalselt nautida, produktiivselt ära kasutada ja igas väikses asjas head märgata!

Like I mentioned in the last post, I am working here in Cyprus in one hotel in animation team as an animator. It means a person, who makes an entertainment for guests. In the ideal world, there should be 6 (or even 7) people in our animation team, but because of a little mess here, there were only 4 and now there’s finally 5 of us again. Compared to other hotels we are still a quite small group of animators, but I feel it’s enough, and also easier to work than in a bigger team.

Somehow we had here a situation quite a time, while nobody of us was speaking Russian, but compared to other numbers of vacationers, Russians are for sure top 1. Definitely, they are the ones (information from local businessmen), who are bringing lots of money to Cyprus, especially to Limassol (the city where I live), they have lots of developments and buildings here. Sadly, we have noticed, that even if they can, then they don’t like to speak in English. With kids, it’s easier, we can also communicate in body language, or we have some really talented and helpful children, who can speak English and Russian, and they are happy to be our translators. Fortunately, there are again 5 of us now in the team and the new girl speaks Russian. The last one, who spoke Russian with kids and their parents, was Silver, who left already in the end of August. I think that we could manage without Russian speaking person, but the parents themselves want and miss it.

Animation work is separated for kids and adult animation, workers(animators) as well. I was hired for kids and kids club, but I was promised that if I wish, I can try to do activities for adults too. Though I have wished, then it’s been harder to manage until now. Actually, there should be at least two people working in kids club, but when I arrived, there was no one. All our 4 people were officially in adult animation, so there was a situation where everyone did everything. This is also the reason, why mostly until now I couldn’t get out from the kids club at all, because somebody was supposed to be with the kids as well and the “older animators” were bored of it. Finally, the week before last week new girl arrived and fortunately she is also with me only in kids animation.

Usually program for the day is following. The kids club is open: 10.00-13.00 15.00-17.00 19.30-22.00, these are also our working times. To measure in hours, then we don’t work so much (7-7,5h), but since we have to go to work three times per day, it doesn’t leave us much spare time. The program (picture above) for kids is following. From 10am to 12pm it is creative time (painting, artwork, etc) or just playing time. Then 12pm there is an opportunity to go to the pool for kids gymnastic in water, including playing and dancing of course.

The program for adult animation offers opportunity to do some activities, like stretching 10.30am and Zumba dancing 11am every day. This is really one highlight of the day, at least for me. Usually, one of my teammate leads those activities, but at least one day of week, when she has a day off, I can lead it or sometimes luckily even more. To be honest, last weeks we have just enjoyed the Zumba for ourselves, even when no guest is joining, three our team members (including me) are just dancing it for fun and workout. These activities used to be held on the beach most of the season, where it was very hot, but maybe a little better breeze from the sea. They are now held, still outside, but closer to the hotel, on the grass area next to the bar. Unfortunately, this grass area is totally uneven and actually a downhill. Both of these grounds (sand on the beach and grass area on the slope) are quite challenging and not the grounds on where I’ve used to dance or stretch. On the grass area the sun is still hot, but I think it’s more bearable.

At 13 o’clock we have our break time, when we usually go back to our apartment to workout or on the beach to get some sun or just rest. We have to be back at the hotel 20-30min before 15 o’clock to have enough time to eat lunch from the buffet in our hotel.

At 15 o’clock we open again the kids club. In three days at week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays) it’s then time for “the big game”. It means that according to the topic of the day, that is Pirates, Halloween or Safari, kids are making hats or masks for themselves and after going for a big treasure hunt around the hotel. According to the topic, these hats can be pirate, ghost, pumpkin or some animal shaped. Also, depending on the topic, kids need to find different hints for treasure hunt around the hotel, but also using the special treasure hunt map. Usually, the winner gets a free ice cream voucher and the day for him/her is made.

After the big game around 16 o’clock, it is time for face painting – this is also very enjoyable part of the day! I was pretty bad at first, when doing it for the first time in my life, but I have to say I’ve improved. I add some pictures from my creation.

At 16 o’clock there is an aqua gym/aqua aerobics time for adult animation, where also I’ve been participating many times to support my teammate who is leading the activity and also to invite more guests to join. At 17 o’clock it’s again the break time. Then we have 2h to make a little nap or something else productive (but usually it’s very sleepy time of the day…). I used to be able to go to the beach as well on this break, but right now it’s already getting cooler at this time and the sun is starting to set even at 6pm.

Already at 19.30 some of us (usually me and the new girl) need to be back at the hotel to open kids club. Since we go earlier than others, we can also finish earlier (lately 21.30, when others 22.00). At 20 we start mini disco, that is also one of the highlights of the day, at least for the kids, but for us getting a little bit annoying already. The disco used to be held magnificently outside of the building in the bar area, where kids could be on stage and have the real disco feeling. Music was very loud, we could use the microphone and there were sometimes even 20+ kids. Now, since the small number of kids and lots of complaints from restaurant guests because of loud music, we have moved inside. To be more specific, we stay inside the kids club to dance our funny Crazy Frog, chicken, Minion and lots of other dances there. Because there are less kids now, then it usually happens with 5-10 kids.

On Tuesday evening there is held an event in the hotel called cocktail management. This is meant for the new guests to offer opportunity for them to meet managers of the hotel and enjoy the free champagne and appetiser snacks at hotel cost. For animation team it means some extra tasks to dress ourselves up, chat with guests and entertain them. To be honest, I think it has been one of the most challenging tasks in my work, because this kind of small talk is not for me. In general the idea of this event is not bad at all to offer the opportunity for guests to meet with hotel staff and the space for giving some straight feedback about their stay in the hotel, but for me it feels overall fake. Don’t get me wrong, it is possible to find some really nice people and have a really good and deep conversation with them, but when the hotel is full of Russian speaking guests, then it’s harder.

In every evening there are some fabulous shows for (mostly) grownups. This is like the adult animation part, but our animation team doesn’t participate – there are professional dancers / showmen. For example, on Mondays it’s the fabulous fire show, on Tuesdays it’s the Comedy magician show, also there are Cypriot dancers show and Latin dance show or when no show, then one time at week there is a Movie night with popcorn. To be honest, I think I’ve seen them all only once or maybe not even that, because mostly in the evenings at that time I need to be in the kids club.

Our home, meaning the apartments are approximately 5min away from the hotel. But there is enough going back and forth, especially when you need to go to work for 3 times a day.

We don’t get a lot of spare time. Everyone has one day off per week and evening also before that. This is also quite good and I’ve always tried to use it as productively as possible. I’ve visited different cities and places in Cyprus to get to know the island better.

To be really honest, then actually with August we finished our “high season” and together with that most of the activities. In the first weeks of September we’re quite shocked that how is it possible that it’s so quiet and is it gonna be like that until the end of the season, but luckily some kids have come and we can still entertain someone. Now in October there are again more people in the hotel and in fact the hotel was few times even overbooked, but mostly they are elderly, families with babies or people who come here only for the conference. Kids in our target group are probably already enjoying classes in school. So because at the day time we mostly don’t have kids anymore in the kids club, then it’s been quite boring now. Some days we have in kids club just 5 animators sitting (on their phones..) and waiting for the kids… Fortunately, our mini disco at night is still popular and from somewhere some kids are appearing.

Since there are only few weeks left until the end of the season and my work, I’m definitely not complaining. Anyway, it’s been quite a holiday job for me. My family is coming to visit me soon and then time is just flying. While living in Cyprus I’ve got some very important and needed lessons about life and myself. They have been everything else than easy, but these experiences are just for growing stronger. Now I just need to use the time that’s left as well as possible, be productive, discover the island more and just see the good in every little thing!
